“The Sea and Sand,” 2021, by L.E.M., Intersect Antigua

As the sun languidly descends toward the horizon, lilac, rose quartz, and marigold hues stretch across once cerulean skies. Clouds dyed in purple scatter overhead, the tips of their tufts illumed by an orange-pink glow. Below, gentle waves of blue curl, crest, and roll onto soft pink sands. Did you know? The Sea and Sand are well acquainted.

They reach out to one another. The Sand outstretches her arms, hands and hair pink and grainy like the Barbudan shores. Look closely, and you may find shells that glitter alongside the golden sheen of her skin. Her gaze is forever fixed toward the Sea - whose lustrous locks of swelling azure and turquoise refract the dusk through shimmering seafoam. Dark blue lashes flutter over wondrous, glimmering eyes; her gaze is warm and overflowing with affection. Her skin is deep - yet radiant - like abysmal, watery depths.

Did you know? The Sea and Sand are lovers.

With every ebb and flow, they shape and are shaped. With each rush and churn, they guide and are guided. Time and time again, they converge and reconverge.

And the result? What they create is an emblem of their love. It is both fear inducing and freeing. It is a landscape forever changed and forever changing. It is the beach, the coast, the threshold between the land that harbours us and the harbours of yonder.

If the seashore is formed through love, should we not love it the same?

Hello everyone!! L.E.M here with new art to share! This is a very special piece that I made for Pride -- super belated, I know, but who said we can't celebrate Pride all year round? I also made it as a bit of a spoiler for Intersect's Caribbean Feminist Stories campaign, which will be returning NEXT WEEK!!! 🥳 Can you guess what the theme will be?
