I’m That Girl

Girl By Lake_Nappy Studios

Hi! Who me? Oh yes, I’m that girl…

The girl who wears sneakers and dresses,

While not caring about what people think.

A girl whose dreams are taller and higher

than the expectations that persons who never

even spoke to her, set for her.

Yes, I’m that girl! The one who you saw

waiting in the line at Starbucks as you

silently muttered: “If she has another cup of

that, she’ll burst…”

The same girl you cat-called and whistled at

as she passed by.

A girl who has had men glare at her because

of her curves, hair or skin colour, as they

made assumptions and attached an age to

her based on looks.

I’m that girl, the one who was told she

couldn’t do something because she was

living in a man’s world and it’s a man’s job.

A girl who sometimes enjoys wearing

shorts, just because of the heat or to change

it up and notch,

Not to be discriminated, receive attention or

to be called a whore.

With all the assumptions, discrimination and

so much more thoughts you’ve had, before

getting to know who I am, here’s something

to note next time….

That same girl is strong, independent, and

smart.

She’s crowned in beauty and wisdom. The

wisdom that she grew from her experiences

and from sharing with others.

She doesn’t have to ‘live up to her name’

because she can create her own and new

legacy….

You may set a standard for her, but let me

inform you: This girl who stands before you

is more capable than what you or anyone

else thinks, and she can achieve things

higher than the stars and your expectations.

All the girls of the world, either black or

white, short or tall, thick or slim…

You are beautiful! Never forget that!

No matter what they think or the world

pictures you to be!

Lift each other up, don’t pull each other

down!

Be yourselves and together create and

innovate big things.
